Strategy

In 2006, 36% of the Portuguese population between the ages of 16 and 74 accessed the Internet, 80% of those being individuals with a Secondary educational level, 87% with a Superior educational level and 96% users among students. Our country went from 17% of homes with broadband access in December, 2004, to 34% in the same month in 2006, doubling the percentage in just two years.

Citizens perform quite diversified activities over the Internet, namely, the use of communication tools and services, information search, e-commerce, education and tutorials seeking. Since surfing the Web can also mean subjecting oneself to some risks, it is crucial to educate our citizens in safe and informed Internet use, so as to avoid and mitigate potential problems. Thus, it is decisive to adopt a positive strategy to thrive for a more enlightened and conscious society, one able to protect itself from problems deriving from Internet use.

The Internet Segura project has four main lines of action:

  1. Promoting awareness for safe Internet use;
  2. Informing citizens about resources regarding safe Internet use;
  3. Educating citizens and professionals in safe Web using;
  4. Creating a hotline for illegal and harmful content report, in strict cooperation with appointed police taskforces and Internet providers, so as to accelerate proper evaluation and measure taking.

The actions we aim to develop are organized in structuring projects, transversal projects and focalized projects.
